Diary, an Island of Memory
Abstract
The memory (and the act of remembering) is an imprecise resource, a personal deviation marked by interpretation. It is in constant construction and rearrangement since it depends on each subject’s framework of experiences. This essay focuses on the theme of the non-constancy of individual memory regarding lived and constructed experiences. It seeks to comprehend the debates surrounding it, both in theory and in artistic-literary expressions, in addition to exploring its memories – of two specific trips – to research how the inventive construction of memory can translate ambiances. A revisit to Chiloé in the south of Chile, and Marajó, in the north of Pará, Brazil, is attempted to highlight fictional streams of memory that can unite two territory islands separated by water and isolated by the South-American continent.
