Invasion, Ethnocide, Racial Democracy and Cultural Appropriation

In dialogue with the dossier “Atlantic: Transits, Memories and Perspectives” – which, based on discussions in the graduate courses at Escola da Cidade, poses questions for the critical debate of past, present and future relations between America, Africa and Iberian Peninsula – the works that integrate the series “Invasion, ethnocide, racial democracy and cultural appropriation” recreate, in the illustrations of nautical maps and charts, one of the most emblematic scenes in the recent history of humanity: the navigations and the “discovery of the new world". However, unlike its original version, with colors ready to portray the exuberance of the newly explored region, it operates a visual lowering, based on black and white. It is, therefore, a reinterpretation of the first efforts to represent the colonization system, and its exploration.
